31 淡/dàn

Tasteless/Mild

Zhè tāng yǒu diǎnr dàn, máfan zài jiā diǎn yán.

这汤有点儿淡,麻烦再加点盐.

The soup is a little mild, please add more salt.

32 地道/dìdao

Local/Authentic

Tā de hànyǔ shuō de zhēn dìdao.

他的汉语说得真地道。

His Chinese is very authentic.  

33 冻/dòng

Freeze/To Freeze

Shuǐguǎn lǐ de shuǐ dòng le.

水管里的水冻了。

The water in the pipe froze.

Hanban stressed this word as an adjective. However, we are using it in the sentence sample as a verb, because in normal speech, it is usually used as a verb.

34 独特/dútè

Unique

Zhè wèi lǎoshī de jiàoxué fāngshì hěn dútè.

这位老师的教学方式很独特。

The way this teacher teaches is very unique.

35 多余/duōyú

Unnecessary

Nǐ néng bāng wǒ bǎ zhèxiē duōyú de dōngxi qīnglǐ diào ma?

你能帮我把这些多余的东西清理掉吗?

Can you help me clear away the unnecessary items?

36 恶劣/èliè

Vile/Odious, Abominable

Yóuyú tiānqì èliè, fēijī bùdébù gēnggǎi hángxiàn.

由于天气恶劣,飞机不得不更改航线。

Due to the bad weather, the plane had to change its course.

37 发达/fādá

Developed

Měiguó shì gè jīngjì fādá de guójiā, dàn láodòng chéngběn fēicháng gāo.

美国是个经济发达的国家,但劳动成本非常高。

The United States is an economically developed country, but the labor cost is very high.

38 繁荣/fánróng

Flourishing/Prosperous

Zhège chéngzhèn guòqù hĕn fánróng.

这个城市过去很繁荣。

It used to be a very prosperous town.

39 疯狂/fēngkuáng

Insane/Crazy

Wŏmen liă dōu juéde zhè tài fēngkuáng le.

我们俩都觉得这太疯狂了。

We both agree this is crazy.

40 干脆/gāncuì

Clear-cut/Straightforward

Tā huídá de hěn gāncuì.

她回答得很干脆。

She gave a clear-cut reply.

41 高档/gāodàng

Top Grade

Tāmen gòuzhì le yīxiē gāodàng jiājù.

他们购置了一些高档家具。

They bought some top (high) grade furniture.

42 个别/gèbié

Exceptional/Just One Or Two

Jīntiān zhǐyǒu gèbié rén qǐng le jià.

今天只有个别人请了假。

Only one or two people asked for leave today.

43 根本/gēnběn

Basic/(used in the negative) At All

Wǒ juéde nǐ gēnběn bù xǐhuan tā.

我觉得你根本不喜欢他。

I think that you don’t like him at all.

Hanban stressed this word as an adjective. However, we are using it in the sentence sample as an adverb, because in normal speech, it is usually used as an adverb.

44 公平/gōngpíng

Fair

Zǒngshì wǒ lái dǎsǎo wèishēng, zhēnshì tài bù gōngpíng le.

总是我来打扫卫生,真是太不公平了。

It is not fair that I always have to do all the cleaning.

45 古典/gǔdiǎn

Classical

Tā gèng xǐhuan gǔdiǎn yīnyuè.

她更喜欢古典音乐。

She prefers classical music.  

46 古老/gǔlǎo

Old

Zhōngguó yǒu xǔduō gǔlǎo de xísú.

中国有许多古老的习俗。

There are many old customs in China.

47 固定/gùdìng

Fixed/Regular

Tā mùqián méiyǒu gùdìng shōurù.

他目前没有固定收入。

He currently doesn’t have a regular income.

48 乖/guāi

Well-behaved

Nĭ bùzài shí háizimen dōu guāi jí le.

你不在时孩子们都乖极了。

The children were well-behaved while you were out.

49 光滑/guānghuá

Smooth

Tā de pífū fēicháng guānghuá.

她的皮肤非常光滑。

Her skin is very smooth.

50 广大/guǎngdà

Vast/(of people) Numerous

Tā de xīnshū hěn shòu guǎngdà dúzhě huānyíng.

他的新书很受广大读者欢迎。

His new book was well received by the vast number of readers.

51 过分/guòfèn

Excessive

Tāmen lǎobǎn de yāoqiú tài guòfèn le.

他们老板的要求太过分了。

Their boss’ s demands are excessive.

52 豪华/háohuá

Luxury/Luxurious

Tàitǎnníkèhào céngjīng shì shìjiè shàng zuì háohuá de yóulún.

泰坦尼克号曾经是世界上最豪华的游轮。

The Titanic used to be the world’s most luxurious tourist ship.

53 好奇/hàoqí

Curious

Tā duì shénme dōu gǎndào hàoqí.

他对什么都感到好奇。

He is curious about everything.

54 合法/héfǎ

Legal

Duòtāi zài yìxiē guójiā háishi bù héfǎ de.

堕胎在一些国家还是不合法的。

Abortion is still illegal in some countries.

55 合理/hélǐ

Reasonable

Tā gěi wǒ de jiàqian hěn hélǐ.

她给我的价钱很合理。

The price she gave me is very reasonable.

56 横/héng

Horizontal/Across

Yī kē dăo le de shù héng zài mǎlù shàng.

一棵倒了的树横在马路上。

A fallen tree is lying across the road.

57 糊涂/hútu

Muddled/Confused

Nĭ bă wŏ dōu nòng hútu le.

你把我都弄糊涂了。

You’ve got me all confused.

58 华裔/huáyì

Foreign Citizen Of Chinese Origin (descent)

Dào mùqián wéizhĭ, yŏu sān wèi huáyì mĕiguó rén huòdé le nuòbèi’ĕr jiăng.

到目前为止,有三位华裔美国人获得了诺贝尔奖。

So far, three Americans of Chinese descent have won Nobel Prizes.
